Windsor- the stair hall

A historic landmark in Old Enfield, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Austin. Tim Cuppett led the design. I documented it, I took it through the city, and I ran construction administration in the field.

The Historic Landmark Commission

On a landmark you are not asking permission to build. You are asking permission to change something the city has already decided is worth keeping, and the answer is usually no. We went in asking for two of the harder things: an addition to the historic structure, and a porte cochere the client wanted.

We got both, all the way through.

Then the field

Construction administration on a landmark is most of the work anyway, because almost every decision gets made standing in the house, against something you found when you opened a wall. You cannot draw your way out of a 1920s framing condition in advance. You go look at it, and then you decide.
